ATB needs to win two more play-offs to complete their dream (1-1)
Atlético Baleares failed to secure direct promotion in the second leg of the play-off for a place in Second Division A played on Sunday at Son Malferit and which ended in a 1-1 draw between ATB and Racing.
The Balearic team had the ultimate glory within their fingertips. They pulled off a magnificent result in the first leg (0-0 in Santander) and didn’t lose the second leg (1-1 at Son Malferit), but the double value of away goals handed promotion to Racing.
Fullana put ATB ahead with a penalty in the first half, but Buñuel tied at the start of the second half with a shot from the edge of the area.
However, Atlético Baleares will have a second chance to go up as they were champions of their group.
Manix Mandiola’s boys now need to win two play-offs against two of the top four teams from other groups to see their dream come true. The draw will be held on Monday 3 June at the Federation.
At the end of the match, ATB coach Manix Mandiola said: “I’m a bit irked. The players are even more so as they did their very best, but it just wasn’t enough. The game was tight, with very few chances for goals. In life, there aren’t always two opportunities, but we’ve earned the right to get another chance”.
